Last night in Da Nang

Hotels in Vietnam are a mystery. This last one has put all the others in perspective.

I’m heading to Da Lat, but I still have two more nights in Da Nang. The other two hotels I’ve stayed at in Da Nang were okay. Though I should have stuck with the first one instead of moving on. So I think, okay, you’ve tried the budget hotels now. Let’s see what we get if I chip in 100 kr. more per night. And with a hotel whose very first photo is a bathing nymph gazing out with doe eyes from the edge of the pool, what could possibly go wrong?

The hotel does look high-end, at least. Nice, clean reception. Pool up on the 12th floor under a blue sky.
I also have ants in the room. Not many, but enough that I get a visit on the bed about once every 10 minutes. I’m staying on the 11th floor, so how they’ve even gotten up here is anyone’s guess.
I have my own bathroom with a bathtub. Big plus. There’s no shower curtain. Big minus. In practice that means bathing in the tub is the only way to bathe that doesn’t leave the whole bathroom soaking wet. As long as you don’t tip water out all over the place.
You have to bathe while there’s still daylight outside, because if you turn on the light, the fan kicks in. And the fan is loud. Very loud. It whines so loudly and at such a pitch that it rattles your bones. I don’t think of myself as fussy about that kind of thing, but I’d rather bruise myself walking to the bathroom in the dark than turn the light on at night.
I’ve been given a room with a door leading to a neighbouring apartment. I think the door leads into the bathroom, because otherwise the Russians next door are some seriously noisy buggers. And when they’re not on the toilet, they’re arguing. Loudly too.
On the plus side, it’s nice. Marble floor tiles, no less. Really fancy.
It’s easy to look forward to Da Lat. Even though this is the best bed I’ve had so far.
